Farnsworth stands in conflict with it’s environment; static and indifferent to the dynamic seasonal changes of the landscape. In order to meet a greater breadth of programming, strategies of engaging the building to be in greater synchronicity with the landscape were explored. The design attempts to turn the environmental factors that Farnsworth currently battles, into necessary assets which in turn become catalysts for architectural and programmatic transformation. The changing spaces and resulting programs of Farnsworth house are directly affected by the seasonal rise and fall of the Fox River. Despite this, the DTES community is extremely close-knit, resilient, and politically active. Months of intensive on-site research and documentation led to the development of this proposal for future social housing. Imagine safely teaching your children the life cycles of honeybees, exposing them at an early age to nature and biology in the city. envision entire façades as pollinating apiaries for urban agriculture, helping to feed the city within a small ecological footprint. B_SPACE is an urban beehive system that is safe, modular, infinitely expandable, and which adapts to any space. This system requires no gloves, masks, bee suits or hive tools, making it more accessible to the average person than the traditional hive. By making urban beekeeping more accessible, this design hopes to contribute to the revival of declining bee populations, boost urban biodiversity and catalyze the potential for viable urban agriculture to ensure greater global food security.
